A few minutes later, we watched as the waitress tripped and fell to the deputy's left. The door was on his right. As he bent down to help her, we slid out the door, closing it quietly behind us.
"We don't have much time before they figure out we're gone," I shouted as we ran to Kelly's car. "Your car won't be as recognizable as mine would be."
Once behind the wheel and out on the highway, Kelly asked, "What now?"
"Now, we find Mike and Ike."
We drove around town for about twenty minutes before we spotted them at a gas station. Who's There was pretty small, and it was late at night. There were very few cars on the road. And by very few, I mean twoâus and them.
"Pull over." I motioned toward an apartment building lot across from the station. We slid into a spot facing them.
"Have you got a plan?" Kelly asked. "Once they leave, they might notice us following them. And if they killed Smith, they're dangerous."
"No. I don't have a plan," I admitted. "We're going to play this one by ear."
Kelly squealed. "This really is exciting! Just don't get me killed."
"Of course I won't. I know what I'm doing," I lied.
Kelly's concern caught me off guard. I was known for doing stupid and dangerous things, but she was a mother and a wife. Anything bad that happened to her affected her family.
The men went into the gas station together, which was weird, and emerged empty-handed, which was also strange. They got into their car and drove off. I motioned for Kelly to pull out and follow them but from a distance. It would be dangerous if they spotted us. But then again, they were probably used to more traffic than this, so maybe they wouldn't notice.
My cell buzzed. It was Rex. He must've noticed we were gone. I didn't answer it.
"They're heading for the park," Kelly cried out. "Where the murder was!"
So that was it. They were going back to the scene of the crime. Typical and predictable. Had they left something behind and were going to get it back? My cell said it was after midnight. No one would be there at this hour. In fact, the gate would be closed. But if they'd murdered Smith, a gate wouldn't stop them.
I directed Kelly to drive past them as they turned left onto the gravel road leading to the park. We pulled into a cornfield a few hundred yards away and parked.
"Wish I had a gun," I mumbled.
"How about this?" Kelly pulled a huge .44 mag revolver from her purse and handed it to me.
I stopped dead in my tracks. "Where did you get that?"
"It's Robert's. He bought it a month ago." She shoved the gun into my hands and stared at it. "It's a weird-looking gun. Why is it so big?"
I opened it and checked to see if it was loaded. "It can bring down elk, buffalo, and even elephants. Why did he buy it?"
Kelly shrugged.
